August 10th was a red letter day in the annals of Chiranjiv Bharti School,
Palam Vihar Gurgaon. It felicitated the community children participating in the
“SCIMA Digital (Science & Maths) Enhancement Program” being successfully
implemented by Learning Links Foundation (LLF) with support from Dell YouthConnect
Program.
The partnership between Learning Links Foundation (LLF) and Chiranjiv Bharti School
was initiated in the month of May ‘09. The SCIMA (Science & Maths) Digital Enhancement
Project of LLF focuses on a threefold strategy:
- Enhance Science & Math Learning for classes VI - IX
- Provide digital literacy skills in a 21st Century learning environment
to students between 5 -17 years
- Help underprivileged children from the community gain digital literacy and 21st
century skills.
The Project focuses on providing the students with exemplary models of integration
which would help develop essential digital literacy skills and enhance core curriculum
learning in Maths and Science.
Besides impacting the school students, the SCIMA Digital Enhancement Project also
aims to bridge the digital divide; bring into its fold the children from the community
who have limited or no access to technology. Training programs are being conducted
for the students from outreach schools. Till date 350 students have been trained
on digital literacy and 21st century skills.
The ceremony gave an opportunity to these students from neighborhood schools and
communities, to showcase their work and share their experiences. The students enacted
and played the role of ‘Health Officers’ and shared their products like ‘Master
Plan for an Ideal Community, Poster of “Manage Waste” and a Presentation
on “Prevention of Malaria & Dengue”. These products had been created during
the 12 day training in the computer lab at Chirenjiv Bharati School, Palam Vihar
using various applications like Paint, Multimedia, Word Processor etc. The children
also shared their experiences of working collaboratively and how the experience
helped them become responsible about their surroundings. They also shared their
visions and how the learning acquired during this training will help them in realizing
their dreams.
The parents with tears in their eyes thanked DELL & LLF for providing their children
with such an opportunity. They were amazed by the confidence exhibited by their
children and what they had managed to create.
‘I never knew how to switch on or off a computer. Today along with my friend Sushma,
we help those students who have difficulty in operating computers. I am quite familiar
with Word, Power Point and internet browsing. Thanks to everyone for making my dream
come true’
Neha Kumari-15 years
‘I cannot afford a computer for my son. I express my sincere gratitude for giving
an opportunity to all these children to learn what is required in today’s world’.
