Creating New Frontiers

Gita is a 15 year old girl belonging to Chauma village, in Palam Vihar Gurgaon. A traditional and conservative society the villagers allow education for their women but they are still not given the importance they deserve.

Gita studies in class VIII in the neighborhood school .From a very humble family, her father works as a gardener while her mother works as a house maid. Like other young girls of her village she studies in the morning but the rest of her day revolves around the house, cooking and taking care of her younger brother. But this was not enough for Gita. In her heart she carried a lot of dreams and a part of her wanted very badly to study hard and become someone everyone around could be proud of. She did not like the way women were not considered important and wanted to educate her self to change that. She waited for an opportunity to help her move ahead in life.

One day her Principal introduced them to the explore@myworld.com program. An initiative of Dell and LLF (Learning Links Foundation) it was meant to empower underserved children of the community with technology skills. She felt this was the opportunity to move ahead and learn skills that everyone needed to know in today’s world and very enthusiastically decided to join the program.

She found the explore@myworld.com curriculum very interesting and quickly grasped what was being taught. Soon she became adept at handling various technology tools. From then she dreamt of creating a project to deal with some community issue to educate and help others. This would also be a part of the project she was required to do after the completion of the program on real life problems.

Monsoon had brought mosquitoes and it seemed a perfect opportunity to Gita to make a project on how to deal with the out break of malaria and dengue which spreads with the onset of monsoons. Poor hygienic conditions in the village had led to an increase in the spread of the epidemic. Along with a group of other children she collaborated to research on what causes the epidemics and then came up with innovative ideas to tackle the problem along with creating awareness about Malaria & Dengue. For this they browsed the internet and collected information by going around in the village and identifying the places which collected standing water and therefore bred mosquitoes. After which Gita approached the Sarpanch (head of community) to be able to share this presentation with the people of the village.

In a village assembly this young girl elaborated and detailed on the danger epidemics could cause to the health of all specially the little children. All mothers present there listened to her presentation very carefully when she spoke about the simple measures they could follow to stop the spread of these epidemics in the village. Supported by strong visuals her presentation made a lot of sense to the villagers and they all left the assembly resolving to follow the suggestions in the presentation.

When monsoon came this little hamlet remained safe and the malarial epidemic passed them by. Gita’s efforts were applauded by the Sarpanch himself along with all other leaders of the assembly. This young girl had made a lot of sense and had proved to the villagers that women needed to be given a chance too. Gita’s parents who are very impressed by her new skills, have decided to make sure their daughter studies ahead and even does a job after her education is complete.

Her project has also entailed a cleaner and healthier village for all.

Geeta who was a very shy girl has become a very confident girl. She wants to become a doctor. In her words
'Thanks to the explore@myworld.com Program. It has helped me realize my potential. I would like to take up social issues and work towards the betterment of my village. Nothing is impossible if we have the conviction.'
