Literacy in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology is essential
today for an appreciation of the rapid expansion of human knowledge and strong economic
growth in the years ahead. Students as the leaders of the future, have to be able
to think critically about the world and to make informed decisions about personal
and societal issues and this they can do only with a strong Math and Science background.
The SCIMA Digital Enhancement Project a Dell and LLF (Learning Links Foundation)
collaboration encourages science and math learning and digital literacy in a 21st
century environment.
250 students participating in the Science Exhibition held on 20th March’10
This project is a part of Dell’s vision of creating a generation of young people
across the globe prepared to connect. This program has been introduced in 5 nodal
schools across India and is being implemented by Learning Links Foundation in collaboration
with Dell’s signature program ‘Dell YouthConnect Program’.
The state government’s vision to enhance the quality of education in the government
schools is being achieved by the implementation of this Project. Through this project
the government aims to create a model to modernize and improve the math & science
learning so that the other government schools can follow the same.
Since the inception of the SCIMA Digital Enhancement Project in
Padippaga Chemmal K. Ganapathy Government Higher Secondary School, Kodambakkam,
Chennai in June 2009, a series of initiatives have been taken up in the government
School to encourage and promote interest of students in these subjects and develop
a 21st century learning environment. One of these initiatives is the formation of
the science club ‘Minerva’. The club has helped students engage in activities that
help them move beyond text books and promote creativity and innovation amongst the
learners.
As a part of the activities of the club a Science Exhibition was organized in the
school on 20th March 2010.The students made brilliant science projects be it the
5 feet Dinosaur of the Jurassic Period or the PSLV Rocket for the future. They took
pains to display and explain the projects undertaken by them. They had made science
come alive all around them and related different and difficult concepts to things
around them.
The exhibition made them solve problems relating to the physical environment around
them along with an understanding of concepts. The exhibition
Mrs. Anandhi, Sr. Admin Executive, Dell India Pvt. Ltd was the Guest of Honour for
the day. She expressed great interest in the exhibition and was very delighted at
the interest and dedication exhibited by the students. She also awarded the 3 best
