Every drop adds to the ocean and the effort of three young friends in Padippaga
Chemmal K.Ganapathy Government Higher Secondary School, Kodambakkam, Chennai, has
gone a long way in creating awareness on global warming.
M. John David, A. Dinakaran and E.Surendar all are students’ studying in class VIII.
As a part of the SCIMA Digital Enhancement Program being implemented by Learning
Links Foundation under the Dell YouthConnect Program, the students got an opportunity
to work on the project ‘Global Warming’ undertaken by their Social Studies Teacher,
Mrs. S. Vijayalakshmi.
When the students were asked to think about how humans could prevent global warming,
they thought hard and long on innovative ways to answer that question. All three
boys were very talented painters and being very creative and hard working they wanted
their voice to be heard in a unique way.
They wanted to use their newly learnt technology skills to make a project which
would create awareness in the society and help them understand the dangers of global
warming. First they used the facilities available at Dell Youth Connect Resource
Centre to do research on ‘Global Warming’ and the factors contributing to it. Then
with the help of their teacher they collected information and pictures about global
warming from the Internet. Then they analyzed what they had collected and thought
about ways to present it innovatively.
They had a brilliant idea to paint a picture on the dangers of global warming on
the compound wall of their school. They felt it was a perfect way to create an innovative
and different project and also to make sure it was there for everyone to see, including
passers by at the busy Kodambakkam intersection their school was on.
The idea was so admired by their whole class that all the students decided to donate
some pocket money towards the expenses of buying materials like paints, brushes
etc.
With a lot of hard work and attention to detail the three friends created their
little masterpiece on the compound wall of their school and now plan to use the
other parts of the school building to create more learning aids
A Proud Memory - painting on compound wall
The painting is now a majestic and everlasting reminder of their endeavor
to make the world a better place.
The 21st century skills of collaboration, research and technology awareness helped
them think critically and innovatively to deal with an issue which needs our attention.
