As a child I do not remember learning about the word Logizomechanophobia or in simpler
words Fear of Computers. That was until I became a trainer and met Ms. Sumitra Gauri
of Govt. Sr. Sec School, Adarsh Nagar, Delhi. She suffered from this persistent
and unwarranted fear of computers.
As a trainer with Learning Links Foundation we had learnt that art and patience
is the key word for every person who wishes to take training as a career opportunity.
I knew that as a trainer we should be able to understand and respect the fear of
the unknown in the person/teacher he/she is going to train. But this training was
put to test when Ms. Gauri approached me. She touched me with her freezing cold,
but sweating hands and disclosed her fear of computers. She said that it was only
because of the way I taught and my method of making others learn that had given
her the courage to be there.
Her face is still fresh in my memories, she was sitting on the last chair about
a meter away from the computer with her hands trembling, pleading with me to train
her. I remember thinking for a moment why she had been nominated and that a call
to her Principal would have easily replaced her. But that did not go with what I
believed in. My endeavor had always been to be a good trainer. I addressed all my
teachers' queries the day they mailed, replied promptly when they called and with
all this had built up their confidence and faith in me. Ms. Gauri as a new challenge
and without going deeper into details I welcomed her whole heartedly and requested
her to give more time than others for the training.
The first day was fine where we were all introduced to each other and to the goals
and expectations of the course. On the second day, when the teachers started their
'hands on activities'. I found that while the teacher paired with Ms. Gauri was
quite active and commanded the project, while Ms. Gauri was absolutely passive,
her face ashen white, contributing hesitantly only to the pedagogical discussions.
I insisted that even during the training, the work be judiciously divided between
the pairs. I asked Ms. Gauri who was slow at her work, to stay back for about an
hour and complete her part of work on the Module. I advised her to repeat the same
work at her personal computer at home and sought help from her son who was pursuing
his Graduation course. I even visited her at her house to motivate her.
She proved to be a very hard worker. She managed not only to overcome her fears
but also implemented technology aided learning in her classroom. She even went a
step ahead and trained other teachers in her school.......
She has since then retired but is constantly touch with me through emails, something
once completely alien to her.
I owe all this to my training at LLF. I have managed to achieve tremendous professional
growth as a trainer since I joined in 2000. Every year I have been involved in all
new offerings that Intel had for the teachers.
In the last I have also been a part of 'Community Development Programs' and implement
the program in Delhi, Chandigarh and in Pace Setting Activities of Navodaya Vidyalaya
Samiti.
Currently I head the Online Trainings for Northern and Eastern parts of the country,
facilitating teachers to develop professionally integrating technology supported,
project based learning methodologies in their classrooms......
Thanks to the open attitude of the top management towards their employees I have
always received great respect and motivation. In the next 5 years I see it become
a billion dollar company. I am proud of our key strengths in the field of Scalability
of the Project, Effective Capacity Building, Strong follow-up and monitoring and
Excellence in providing dynamic 24X7 web support.
My vision for LLF is an endeavor to strengthen our current projects, enhance accountability,
increase efficiency and productivity in all activities, enhance business opportunities
and grow 10 X by 2010.
